Vault Door Locks, and Where Biometrics Actually Stand

Fingerprint entry on a vault door is possible, but it is not what the high-security locks do. Here is what mounts to a vault door, and what the standards on the box mean.

Search for a biometric vault door lock and most of what comes back is a residential smart lock — a fingerprint deadbolt built for a front door. Those are good products. They do not mount to a vault door, which uses a container lock behind a hardplate driving a boltwork, not a cylinder through a 1¾-inch stile.

So this page covers the locks that actually fit, and then answers the fingerprint question honestly.

Every figure links to the manufacturer or dealer page it came from. Specs verified 2026-08-04. Where a maker does not publish a figure, the cell reads “Not published” rather than an estimate.

What the standards mean

FF-L-2740B is the US federal specification for locks protecting classified material. A lock meeting it is GSA approved for security containers and vault doors. Both the X-10 and the S&G 2740B meet it[1][2]; the X-10 is the Style 1 lock[1].

UL Type 1 is the commercial electronic safe lock standard, which is what most gun safes and residential vault doors actually ship with. The S&G 6120 is a Type 1 and retrofits most existing doors[3].

The X-10 does not use a battery, and that is the point

The single most misreported fact about this lock: the X-10 is self-powered. Turning the dial generates the power needed to enter the combination and read the audit[1]. There is no battery to die in storage, which is precisely why it is the lock specified for classified containers.

It is also combination-only. The X-10 has no fingerprint reader, and any comparison showing it with biometric entry is describing a product that does not exist.

So can you get fingerprint entry?

Yes, with a caveat worth understanding before you buy.

Two real options, both in the table above.

SecuRam ScanLogic is the cheaper and more available: $260, UL tested, enrols 15 fingerprints alongside 3 codes, and runs 4,000-plus openings on a 9-volt battery[4]. It pairs with any SecuRam body, so if a door already carries a SecuRam keypad the swap is trivial. It is usually fitted with a safe rather than bought loose, so expect to order it through whoever supplies the door.

Sargent & Greenleaf's I-Series biometric keypad retrofits an existing electronic lock of matching diameter, holds up to nine prints, and uses capacitive rather than optical sensing — which matters, because capacitive readers resist the lifted-print spoofs optical sensors fall for[5].

What you will not find is a GSA-approved biometric lock. FF-L-2740B is written around combination entry, so choosing fingerprint means stepping off that standard onto the UL commercial one. For a residential gun room that is a perfectly reasonable trade. For anything you would describe as a vault, it is a real downgrade in what the lock is certified against, and it should be a deliberate choice rather than a convenience default.

What not to buy

Residential smart locks — the Samsung, Lockly and Ultraloq deadbolts that come up in these searches — are built for a hinged interior door with a standard bore. They cannot drive vault boltwork, they sit outside the hardplate, and fitting one to a vault door means putting a consumer lock in front of the thing the door exists to protect.
